Information Circular 2/2010: PENSION POSITION FOLLOWING BUDGET ANNOUNCEMENT AND PAY CUTS

By Deputy General Secretary

A great deal of misunderstanding exists throughout the Defence Forces around the implications for pensions following Budget 2010. PDFORRA has been asked to clarify if suggestions that pensions will be cut by up to 30% in 2011 or that the pension increments between 21 and 31 years service will be removed are true. There is no basis to any of these suggestions at this time.

The factual position is as follows. The Minister for Finance has stated that the pension entitlements of those retiring in 2010 will not be affected.

Changes may or indeed may not be effected from 2011. The nature of pension changes, if any,  to be introduced in 2011 is likely to become apparent by the mid-2010. Members should consider decisions on future service at this point rather than at the moment.

Any members with queries on this matter should contact the National Office for additional advice.
