Information Circular No 07/2021: Reminder Flat Rate Expenses

Members are reminded that the provision of a Flat Rate Expense Allowance from Revenue exists for members of the Defence Forces.

The allowance was introduced to compensate members for the expense associated with the Dry Cleaning of their No. 1 Dress Uniforms and is available to all enlisted personnel not in receipt of Uniform Replenishment Allowance.

Flat rate expenses can be claimed by completing an Income Tax return.

You can find this form in PAYE Services in myAccount. You can do this by following these steps:

  • sign into myAccount
  • click on ‘Review your tax’ link in PAYE Services
  • select the Income Tax return for the relevant tax year
  • in the ‘Tax Credits & Reliefs’ page select ‘Flat rate expenses’ and add it as a tax credit.

The amount of Credit/Relief is dependent on each individuals Tax liability for the year or years in question, therefore members are advised to visit for further information.

Revenue concluded a comprehensive review of the flat rate expense allowances in 2019. The implementation of any planned changes to the flat rate expense regime has been further deferred until 1 January 2022.
