By Industrial Relations Officer

PDFORRA wishes to advise our members that a number of amendments have been made in the areas of Parental, Paternity and Parent’s Leave.

Consequentially, PDFORRA has written to the Official Side seeking the amendment of Defence Force Regulation A.11 and its associated Administrative Instruction.

The most recently enacted statutory provision is for Parent’s leave, which provides for two weeks paid leave to be taken within the first year of a child’s birth.

Members also have an entitlement to Paternity leave of two weeks paid to be taken within the first 6 months after a child’s birth. Defence Force Regulation A.11 Para 33 refers.

Parental leave provides for up to twenty-two weeks unpaid leave for members who are parents of children under 12 years of age. This leave is to be incrementally increased in the coming years. Defence Force Regulation A.11 Para 34 refers.

Members seeking to avail of Parent’s leave are advised, in the absence of current regulatory or administrative provision, to submit applications citing the entitlement under the “Parent’s Leave and Benefits Act 2019”.

Members are reminded that in accordance with Defence Force Regulation A.11 Para 4 “Leave is an entitlement the granting of which is a privilege.

In the event that PDFORRA members encounter difficulties in securing any of the aforementioned leave, they are advised to initially submit an appeal on an Annex MM to Admin Instr A.11, or alternatively, contact a member of their District Committee for assistance.

Additional information on statutory leave entitlements can be found on the Citizens Information website.
