Information Circular No 16/2017: In-Patient and Out-Patient Hospital Charges – Members of the PDF and their Dependants

By Industrial Relations Officer

Members are reminded that no in-patient or out-patient hospital charges should be raised in respect of Permanent Defence Force members and their dependents who attend public hospitals as public patients.

Ordinarily use of accident and emergency services without referral by a GP incurs a charge of €100.  The charge for overnight and day inpatient services is €80 per day up to a maximum of €800 in any 12 consecutive months.

The Charge Applies to the Following Public Facilities:

  • Emergency departments
  • Accident and emergency departments
  • Casualty departments
  • Minor injury units
  • Urgent care centres
  • Local injury units
  • Any other facility providing similar services

To ensure that the charges are not applied to members of the Defence Forces, they must ensure that an AF 715 is completed and signed by the relevant Commanding Officer (Central Medical Unit) and transmitted to the Accounts Department of the hospital attended.

Permanent Defence Force members can source copies of an AF 715 from their Units and PDFORRA members can contact PDFORRA HQ on Freephone 1800 200 250 for further clarification and information relating to in-patient and out-patient hospital charges.
