Information Circular No 11/2017: Operation Pontus – Payment Agreed

By Industrial Relations Officer

Following a long period of struggle, payment at an acceptable level for Operation Pontus has been agreed.  The matter has been formally resolved through the signing of Conciliation Council Report No 502 wef 6th April 2017.

The agreement now provides for an additional daily payment of €15 tax free for the period on sailing order for the Operation Pontus mission.

The agreement also provides for further negotiations on what the appropriate level of payments should be for humanitarian-type missions.  These discussions will take place through a Conciliation Council sub-committee and it is intended that they will take place later this year.

The payment of an allowance equivalent to Overseas Peace Support Allowance has already been made to all of those involved to date.  Arrangements are now being made to pay the balance at the rate of €15 per day and it is expected that all payments due will be made in late April or early May 2017.

The positive outcome of the Operation Pontus claim is a credit to the support and patience of PDFORRA members and activists in the Naval Service.

PDFORRA originally claimed the payment of allowances equivalent to both the Overseas Peace Support Allowance (OPSA) and Armed Overseas Peace Support Allowance (AOPSA) for those serving on the mission.  Following negotiations no progress was made on paying an allowance equivalent to AOPSA and the matter was scheduled for adjudication.  However, following an initial adjudication hearing terms acceptable to both parties were worked out.
