Information Circular No 6/2014: NEW PUBLIC SECTOR SICK LEAVE SCHEME

By Industrial Relations Officer

Under the Haddington Rd Agreement discussions are taking place on the standardisation of paid sick leave arrangements in the PDF.  All other areas have completed the discussions (including third party referral) and the following arrangements are being put in place:

New Public Sector Sick Leave Regulations:                       New public sector sick leave regulations have been introduced with effect from March 31st 2014.  The new regulations – introduced under the Croke Park Agreement – reduce the duration of paid sick leave over a four year period from six months full pay and six months half pay down to three months full pay and three months half pay.  The four year reference period is backdated from the date of introduction

Special Provisions for Critical Illness:                     A new critical illness protocol (CIP) will allow public servants suffering from a critical illness who meet the necessary criteria retain their six months full pay duration of paid sick leave and six months half pay duration of paid sick leave.

Commencement of New Public Sector Sick Leave Regulations:              The new public sector sick leave regulations have been introduced with effect from March 31st 2014.

Exclusion of Members of the Permanent Defence Forces:           The new regulations will not apply to members of the Permanent Defence Force but the broad principles of the new arrangements will.

Negotiations on the application of the above principles are on-going and will be completed later in the year.  PDFORRA are endeavouring to ensure that the unique nature of injury/illness in the PDF is taken into account in the negotiations.
